Slider-crank mechanism

Degenerate case of a four-bar linkage: one of the ground pivots lies at infinity (it becomes a slider). Application: internal combustion engine.

Quick-return mechanism

Whitworth’s quick-return mechanism. Useful in planing, shaping, etc. operations.

Note that a new joint type appears here, not shown so far, the pin-in-slot (with form closure), or fork. It has two degrees of freedom and is equivalent to using two degree-I joints (a slider and a revolute pair) with one fewer link:

Geneva wheel

Converts a continuous rotary motion into an intermittent motion. Note that the kinematic pairs are formed and broken as the two bodies come into contact and separate from each other.
